Canon AE-1 photos can feel warm and sun-soaked, soft and romantic, crisp and colorful, grainy and moody, or bright and spontaneous with flash. But here is the most important thing to know: the Canon AE-1 does not apply one particular color palette or โvintage filterโ to every photograph.
The AE-1 records the light that reaches your film. The final look comes from a combination of the film you load, the lens you use, the light around you and the choices made during development and scanning. That is why two people can use the same Canon AE-1 and create photographs that feel completely different. That is also part of what makes this camera so exciting. You are not locked into one look. You get to discover the kind of photographs that feel like you.
Absolutely. You do not need to master film stocks, lenses, exposure, flash, development and scanning before taking your first photograph. You can begin with one very simple setup:
-A Canon AE-1 with a 50mm lens
-One roll of ISO 400 color film (we love Kodak UltraMax 400)
-Set the lens to โAโ (aperture priorty)
-A shutter speed around 1/125 or 1/250 in ordinary daylight
-A little patience while focusing
-A trusted lab to develop and scan the roll
The AE-1 gives you help with exposure while still letting you experience the wonderfully hands-on parts of film photography. Your first roll may contain a few surprises, but it can also contain photographs you immediately love. Real moments with texture, color and feeling that are entirely your own.
