Clear answers to the questions camera shoppers ask most.
Yes. Shutter-priority auto exposure gives you a helpful first step into manual photography: you choose how motion looks with the shutter speed, and the camera selects the aperture. Focus stays manual, so you still learn to slow down and compose with intentionโand Cute Camera Co. is here when you have first-roll questions.
Yes. The AE-1โs shutter and light meter are electronically controlled, so the camera needs a working 6V battery to take a photo. It uses one 4LR44 or equivalent battery, and a fresh battery is included with your camera.
Set the lens aperture ring to A, choose a shutter speed, and press the shutter button halfway to check the meter. The needle shows the aperture the camera will select. Faster speeds help freeze motion; slower speeds let in more light and can create motion blur.
Yes. Move the lens aperture ring off A, then choose both the shutter speed and aperture yourself. The viewfinder needle still shows the aperture the meter recommends for your chosen shutter speed, giving you a useful starting point while leaving the final decision in your hands.
The Canon AE-1 uses standard 35mm film in color-negative, black-and-white, or slide varieties. Set the cameraโs ASA / ISO dial to the speed printed on the film box. The โ50mmโ on the included lens describes its field of viewโit does not change the film size.
No. The included 50mm is a fixed-focal-length prime lens, loved for its natural perspective and versatility. It is a lovely everyday companion for portraits, travel, street scenes, and learning composition; move closer, step back, or change lenses when you want a wider or tighter view.
Canon FD and New FD manual-focus lenses are the simplest match. Older Canon FL lenses can also be used with stopped-down metering. Canon EF / EOS lenses do not mount directly and are not designed for the AE-1.
The original AE-1 gives you shutter-priority auto exposure and full manual control. The later AE-1 Program adds a Program mode that can choose both shutter speed and aperture for you. Both cameras use manual focus and Canon FD lenses.
No, but it accepts an external flash through its hot shoe or PC sync terminal. Standard electronic flash synchronization is available at 1/60 second, and compatible Canon Speedlites can provide automatic flash exposure control.
Age-related surprises such as tired light seals, inconsistent shutter timing, meter or battery-contact problems, and the familiar โCanon squealโ may not be obvious from listing photosโand some only reveal themselves after a roll is developed. A lovingly restored AE-1 lets you begin with confidence and focus on the memories ahead, not hidden camera problems.
