๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How We Grade Our Cameras

No two cameras are identical, every camera is unique, has its own story and is truly a piece of history. We do our best to group them into three cosmetic categories so you can choose the one that's best for you.

VERY GOOD:

A "very good" body will have minimal signs of wear and tear. Examples include slight impurities likeย  worn leather or metal, signs of age on the bottom plate, and dull marks.ย

GOOD:

A โ€œgoodโ€ body will also look nice but have some additional potential cosmetic wear such as spots with discoloration,ย  worn down metal or small scratches somewhere on the body.

AVERAGE:

An โ€œaverageโ€ body will be a more severe case of cosmetic wear like more extreme discoloration or worn down metal, exterior or interior black specs, deeper scratches, or lines in the eye prism.

Yashica Mat 124 G Description
The Yashica Mat 124 G looks just as good as the photos it takes. Originally making its debut in 1970, you are not going to regret adding one of these to your collection. If youโ€™re new to medium-format photography or just curious about trying something different, this camera is the perfect way to elevate your creative flair.ย

Why You'll Love It:

  • Waist-Level Viewfinder: It feels totally unique! No more holding a camera to your faceโ€”just look down, frame your shot, and snap away. Itโ€™s comfortable and feels so retro-chic!
  • Sharp Photos, Vintage Style: The fixed 80mm lens (a 50mm equivalent) gives you crystal-clear images with an old-school vibe. Perfect for those dreamy, artistic shots.
  • Perfect for Street Photography: Want to capture candid moments without drawing too much attention? This cameraโ€™s waist-level viewfinder lets you be discreet.
  • Budget-Friendly Alternative to other medium format cameras: Get high-end vibes without breaking the bank! Itโ€™s the ultimate gateway into medium-format photography for new photographers.

With the Yashica Mat 124 G, you're diving into the beautiful world of medium format. With larger negatives, better detail, and a more cinematic feel to your shots, the results that this camera produces will take your breath away.

Yashica Mat-124G FAQs

Clear answers to the questions camera shoppers ask most.

Is the Yashica Mat-124G good for someone new to medium format?

Yes for someone willing to meter and focus manually. Its fixed lens, automatic frame spacing, and 12-shot 120 format are friendlier than many modular medium-format systems. Cute Camera Co. is here when first-roll questions appear.

What film does the Yashica Mat-124G use?

120 film; also accepts 220 when correctly configured. It makes 6ร—6 square negatives and provides 12 exposures on 120; 24 on 220. It is called 120 filmโ€”not โ€œ120mmโ€โ€”and the backing paper means the roll is loaded and unloaded differently from 35mm.

Does the Yashica Mat-124G need a battery?

No. The shutter is mechanical; a small battery powers only the built-in meter and is included.

How do focus and exposure work on the Yashica Mat-124G?

Manual focus on waist-level screen; fully manual. The built-in or fitted meter offers guidance, while you set the camera controls.

Does the Yashica Mat-124G lens zoom or change?

The 80mm f/3.5 taking lens is fixed and does not zoom. It gives a natural perspective similar to roughly 50mm on 35mm film.

How many photos will I get from a roll?

12 exposures on 120; 24 on 220. The larger negative is the whole point, but it also makes each frame feel more deliberate than 35mm.

Can I use flash with the Yashica Mat-124G?

PC sync with M/X selection; leaf shutter sync at all speeds. A leaf shutter can synchronize across its timed speeds; focal-plane shutters must stay at or below their stated sync speed.

What is the Yashica Mat-124G best for?

It is especially beautiful for portraits, square compositions, travel, quiet observation, and a first waist-level medium-format experience. The larger negative can hold exceptional detail, gentle tonal transitions, and a distinctive sense of depth.

Why does the viewfinder image move in the opposite direction?

A waist-level TLR view is laterally reversed, so left and right feel swapped at first. After a little practice the slower, floating view becomes one of the cameraโ€™s most charming parts.

Why does restoration matter with a Yashica Mat-124G?

Medium-format cameras rely on precise shutter timing, film spacing, focus alignment, backs, bellows or seals, and controls that may have aged quietly for decades. Restoration gives you a dependable foundation before you commit an irreplaceable moment to one of the rollโ€™s limited frames.
